Great Market Trends for Your Home

November 16, 2013 by Jennifer Myers Filed Under: Interior Design Features, Interior Design Ideas, Uncategorized

Market trends are a great way for interior designers to get inspiration for their client’s homes. Trends can be innovative or they can rethink traditional pieces such as a sofa or table. Whatever the trend discovered at market, the importance lies in how it’s used and its potential to integrate itself into someone’s home. Some trends are functional, and some are just for the aesthetics of it, but either way, they can look amazing in your home!

BEAUTIFUL BENCHES

Benches, as useful as they are, can serve as an accent piece or can bring needed color into a room. A fabulous fabric can bring to life this functional piece and really transform your space. Used at the foot of a bed or in a foyer they become both useful and gorgeous.

GLITZ AND GLAM

Another great trend at market this year was glam furniture that really makes a statement. They are luxurious, yet simple. These pieces can help make your home look stylish and sophisticated through their bold lines, sleek finishes, and stunning fabrics.

REPOURPOSED

Repurposing has been rather trendy lately, but this year at market they took the trend to a whole new level. Repurposed goods such as tennis rackets were used to make huge art pieces that really popped. Depending on the style of your home, you can repurpose different object. Imagine an old rowboat hung on the wall as a bookshelf, or a chair used as an accent shelf on a wall.

Fabulous New Market Trends!

November 1, 2013 by Jennifer Myers Filed Under: Events, Interior Design Features, Interior Design Ideas, Uncategorized

Twice a year the High Point Market (hpmkt) puts together the largest furnishing industry trade show in the world. Last week was their fall market showcase where they filled all 11.5 million square feet of show-space with beautiful new furniture and accessories. Each showroom is complete with the latest ideas in home furnishings and this year’s trends are functional and fabulous!

THE REINVENTED SWIVEL CHAIR

The swivel chair isn’t just for grandparents anymore! This year at hpmkt even the most chic chairs swiveled! Designers have done away with the bulky and shapeless swivel chairs of the past and have embraced the functional sense and comfort of the swivel. The versatility of this type of chair is perfect for an open concept home in which action can be happening all around you!

DELIGHTFUL DETAILS

This year’s most fabulous trend is all about the details! Just like great jewelry can complete the perfect outfit, so too can great detailing complete the perfect furnishing. Whether the detailing is intricate hardware on an dresser or a flair on the back of a couch, the finishing touches are what really make each piece unique and inspiring. The next time you go shopping for furnishing make sure you take into account the beautiful details that really makes the piece shine.

TOPSY-TURVY TABLES

A fun trend this year is tables with platforms of varying heights, some of which, have parts that disconnect. A table with different heights adds depth to a space and allows separate uses for each area. Also, alone the piece makes much more of a statement than would an ordinary flat table. This type of table is a great accent to any room and really calls attention to its uniqueness.

Each year’s trends are interesting and inventive! Keep an eye out for these trends as the appear throughout the year and try to find a fun way to integrate the into your own home!

No More Humdrum Halloween!

October 17, 2013 by Jennifer Myers Filed Under: Interior Design Ideas, Uncategorized

Try something different this Halloween season and make your home a stylish haunted hangout!

Halloween1

Although somehow everyone has already started thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas, we have to make it to Halloween first! Many times Halloween decor can look tacky or out-of-place in your home unless you truly go all out for the holiday. These are some quick and easy tips on how to make your home look put-together and chic this year!

halloween2

  • TIP: Sometimes orange just doesn’t go with the preexisting color scheme in your homes, but making black and white your primary color palate this year amps up the glamour and really makes a statement.

halloween3

  • TIP: If your not big on decorating inside for Halloween but have trick-or-treaters and would like to make the porch inviting, try something like this simple display of bats. Its both polished and minimal but won’t rot on your porch for days after like a pumpkin.

halloween5

  • TIP: Make your fireplace a nice focal point where you can experiment and get a little cluttered, but make sure the rest of the decorations are toned down so this piece can really stand out.

halloween4

  • TIP: If you want to decorate but don’t want to go all the way, use little accents in interesting places (like the bathroom or hallway) to make a point without making it the only thing you see.

The Ideal Home Office

October 9, 2013 by Jennifer Myers Filed Under: Interior Design Ideas, Uncategorized

How to design the ideal home office where you can work efficiently in a beautiful and well organized oasis of your own creation.

HomeOffice1

HomeOffice5

Many of us have the need for a home office whether it be because we are self employed, take work home, or have countless other reasons to need a clean space to sit down and be productive. This space needs to be organized but still inspire our creativity and motivate us when we have to get down to business.

HomeOffice2

TIP: Try using wall organizers such as cork-boards and dry-erase boards to get some of the clutter off your desk and make it easier to find.

TIP: Store things like office supplies in some interesting boxes to reduce visual disarray and add a personal touch to your space.

Just because this is a work space does not mean that it should not reflect you as a person. Your home office should be your own personal sanctuary filled with things that you love and pieces that inspire you.

HomeOffice3

TIP: Fill your space with things that make you happy, but DO NOT use this as an excuse to create clutter, be mindful of every piece you use.

TIP: Don’t be shy when it comes to color. From a splash of your favorite shade to a bold statement of color make your home office a place that inspires you or a place that offers you refuge.

Because we do need to be productive in these spaces, you have to make sure that you are comfortable in your office. Your home office should feel like any other part of your home (except it is just for you). When you feel like you want to be there and don’t have to be there, you will be more efficient.

HomeOffice4

TIP: Make sure you are getting as much natural light as possible, and if thats not an option, make sure you have a bright enough light source.

TIP: Bring a couch or a comfy chair into your space so you can take a second and relax every once and a while if you are getting too overwhelmed.

In the end, your home office should be your escape. Make it work and make it yours.

Simple Ideas to Transition Your Home to Fall

September 27, 2013 by Jennifer Myers Filed Under: Interior Design Ideas, Uncategorized

Fall always arrives quicker than we would like and we need a quick solution to transition our homes from summer to fall that fits within our busy schedules.

Change out: Pillows, Throws, and Area Rugs

Deeper and warmer colors are a basic way to make a room seem a little cozier during the cooler months. This fall experiment with colors like  emerald green, mustard yellow, plum, brick red, and rich blues.

Tip: If you have white sheets on your bed, try changing them out for a nice warm beige set — add a rich colored throw at the end of the bed or in the living room.

Tip: An interesting patterned pillow will create an inviting place to gather with friends and family this season.

Another quick change is to use an interesting runner in your hallway, a rug in your entrance, or layer a seasonal rug over existing carpet to add depth and visual interest.

Tip: Try to stick with deeper shades in your color palate since the rug will most likely be trampled on by wet shoes.

Tip: For a vibrant entryway use an eye-catching runner or layer a rug in the great room for adding a seasonal punch of color.

Art, Display Trays, and Candles

This fall is all about deep colors and gold and silver accents for that extra pop of appeal. Take down the bright framed flower print and exchange it with a more monochromatic print or photo with a simple frame.

Tip: To liven up a living room, guest room or kitchen, have some fun with a dazzling display tray showing off interesting seasonal trinkets, while organizing any potential clutter.

Tip: Having a candle lit helps to make a room feel more intimate and creates an overall warm feeling.

Object’s, Botanicals and Nature

The best way to polish your fall décor is to bring the outside in. For accent pieces it’s all about the details and in this case, it’s all about the natural world in a different context.  The trend of natural wood, wood grain and bark is a great accent and seasonal change.

or something like…

Tip: Take a simple clear vase and wrap it with birch bark then decorate with season branches, vines.

Tip: Use hazelnut shells or walnuts as the base in a clear vase with an arrangement of leaves and twigs.  These accents help to create visually interesting pieces as well as refining a seasonal style.

Creative Sinks!

September 21, 2012 by Jennifer Myers Filed Under: Bathroom

Powder room, spare bathroom, guest bathroom, most homes have one and in most homes they look about the same, small sink, toilet, mirror, and rug.  So what can you do to spice yours up?  What about a sink that is unusual, perhaps a re-purposed item, a piece of art, carved from stone — there are so many inspiring options it makes one wonder why not have something special and unique in a guest bath.  There are lots of different sinks out there, and we have a few examples of some of the most artistic, funky and inventive ones we’ve seen.

One idea we have seen at J Myers & Assoc. is the copper bucket sink, seen below – we liked the idea of using something created for a different purpose and making it into this wonderful sink.  This is a great example of taking something you would find at a flea market or country store, and converting it into a stylish, eye-catching, piece.  You could do copper, as seen in the first picture, or leave it galvanized steel, as seen in the second example — what’s your design style?

Another different, but not too different, idea is to have a stone bowl sink.  There are a few of these below.  You can pick the color and type of stone to go with your overall design style.

We’ve saved the most “unique” for last!  The internet lately as been showing these fish-tank sinks!  This is quite a statement piece that in the right home would be an amazing conversation piece! It is truly creative, to say the least.

Well, there you have it, a few examples of sinks that can really make your powder room unique, show a bit of personality and your design style. The powder bath sink is a great way to be a little different.  Thanks for reading!

Man Caves to Man Rooms

September 13, 2012 by Jennifer Myers Filed Under: Interior Design Ideas

Every man has one….a dream of his very own: “Man Cave – Man Room.”  So let’s make it happen! There are some pretty awesome Man Caves out there!  Man Caves take my mind to Tim the Tool man Taylor, and his “Argh, Argh, Argh man laugh.” However, YOUR Man Cave can be anything you want it to be – sports, hunting, NASCAR, boating, music, the list is only limited by your imagination– it’s all about creating a room that demonstrates YOUR personality.

There are so many fun ways to make your theme come to life.  There are also MANY  ways to express your theme.  You can choose a fun, humorous style, an artsy style, even a more “classy” style.  That’s right, I said “classy” when referring to a Man Cave/Room, but I promise it can be done!

First things first, what are your hobbies?

Hunting? Outdoors? Sports? Cars? Movies?

Below you will see a hunting/outdoor man room.  It has a beautiful antler chandelier that really ties the feeling of the room all together.  While the theme is understated in this room, you can still get a sense of the owners personality.

There is also, of course, the sports themes.  Which is what many picture when they hear “Man Cave/Man Room.”  Below you will see that themes (sports for example here) can be carried out however you want, sophisticated, contemporary, and fun!

Directly above is a picture of a sports themed man cave that J Myers & Associates created for a model home.

As you can see the amount and type of décor available for your Man Cave is limitless.  From antler chandeliers, sports themed lamps, even walls and ceilings painted to go with your theme.

Re-purposing is a great way to decorate your cave.  In the picture below you can see that kegs were made into leather-seated bar stools and a CAR was made into a very original sofa!  Unique and fun!

Once again, you do not have to go with “traditional” man cave ideas; you can go with a more classic man cave.  Classic man caves may not necessarily have a theme, unless you consider “classic” a theme.

The Man Caves above are timeless and do not necessarily follow a theme.  The point is that your Man Cave should be what you love.  It should be a place to relax and enjoy yourself, while having a little fun.

Thanks for reading another J Myers & Associates post, we want to help you turn your dream Man Cave into a reality!
