Yes, it’s that time of year again – and while I might be a little late in getting this out, there’s still plenty of time to dive into some fun DIY projects that the whole family can enjoy.

What I’m Loving Right Now

From an old book to a whimsical holiday tree or star ornament, there are so many creative ways to reimagine a book that’s no longer on the shelf. Add a little extra charm with ribbon, paint, or beads – or keep it simple and understated, depending on your décor style. These little handmade touches can brighten any corner of your home, from a family room or stair landing to a kids’ play area or a cozy reading nook. The magic is in the creativity and thoughtfulness, not perfection.

A Detail Worth Sharing

Another idea that’s always a hit? Message jars for each family member.

Fill them with handwritten notes of gratitude, holiday wishes, or short stories. Maybe a phrase like, “The Greatest Gifts I See in You.”

Add a touch of sparkle with fairy lights or small ornaments. Not only does this create a beautiful décor element, but it sparks conversation and reflection when family members read the messages together. Imagine the grandparents, aunts, and uncles adding their thoughts – it’s a gift that keeps on giving, long after the season ends.

It’s a simple gesture that  could even become a beloved tradition.

Inspired By

Of course, as a designer, I love a beautifully decorated tree and a well-styled room. But there’s something truly special about creating spaces that celebrate the process as much as the outcome. Show off décor that’s been thoughtfully crafted, and get the kids involved! Share time, laughter, and maybe a little too much sugar along the way – because what’s a craft project without a few treats?

I’ll admit it – I’m not a huge DIY’er myself. But I’m all about opportunities to bring family and friends together. Unplug from the TV and electronics, spread out some butcher paper, make a “mess,” and most importantly, share stories and good cheer. These are the moments that create memories, far beyond the perfectly polished décor.

An Opportunity to Give

As we celebrate the season and think of opportunities for giving, I wanted to a moment and introduce a great Portland area non-profit. Birch Community Services was started by Suzanne Birch and her husband and all about the bread … it has grown into a 33-year-strong organization that supports families with food, education and financial freedom.

When I was president of NWSID I was given the opportunity to become familiar with Birch as we provided a design contest for updating their on-site bathrooms (which were years old) along with working with our vendors, suppliers and trades people … through donated products, donated labor and in-kind labor by the Birch members, we were able to update and provide functioning and designed with flair restroom.

Final Thoughts

This year, like so many others, has been challenging – whether it’s family health concerns, financial stress, or the general state of the world. The holidays are the perfect time to pause and focus on what truly matters: the people we love. Even simple, creative activities can bring warmth, laughter, and connection into our homes, no matter the weather outside.

So this season, let’s embrace a little chaos, a lot of creativity, and plenty of joy. Gather your loved ones, craft together, and celebrate the magic of the season – not just with decorations, but with memories that last long after the ornaments come down.

As we move into 2026, let’s carry the joy and creativity of the season into our homes all year long. Whether it’s thoughtfully crafted décor, cozy corners, or bold design choices, your space should reflect the warmth, personality, and memories you want to surround yourself with.
